Over the holidays I did a reno on my kids room, and it had me thinking a lot about how a reno feels like being in business.

I had been planning this reno for quite some time.

The best part of all of this, is that I was able to do this for my kids. They share a room and had to pull out the trundle bed they shared previously. Goosey told me a while ago she felt like it was not her room and she felt left out.

And I had to put down the martyr card and stop making it about me and what I was able to provide. I opened a savings account for this reno months ago. The fact is, most people look at the list of things they want and give up before they even begin. If it’s not instantaneous results, they throw it in the trash.

But as my favorite quote says, ”The time will pass anyway. Don’t let that stop you from chasing your dreams.” My path has not been easy. It was a hard fought battle to purchase this house for the first time. And now, I’m just finishing purchasing it for the second time.

I didn’t plan that my life would take the drastic turn that it did. But, it was my choice to dive in and make a life I love, and it was my choice if I continued to play the victim.

Every time I make a room or a corner of it just how I imagined, I feel a lot of joy. And also mixed feelings. I thought this was going to be my forever home with my family and my partner. And now it’s me and the kids. That feels both heartbreaking and fucking liberating.

A lot of life mirrors a home reno. You have to make a HUGE mess that feels like an absolute disaster (for a long ass time) before you can make it how you want it. The demolition comes before the beautiful after photo. And that picture perfect “after” photo that you used as your inspiration is not even close to how it ends up looking.

You have to still live in this house and make new messes. AND enjoy it. Enjoying the process and the journey makes it so much sweeter. A home reno or a life change does not happen in an instant. It takes dedication to continually working to make it a reality. Your business is the same.
